Lynn's Book Club Doll Class at the luxurious Hixon Green, Hove![]() Hello Lyn's super amazing book club!
Maria Doll and I can't wait to teach you how to make me ~ an easy heirloom doll! She has booked the loveliest poshest venue in Brighton & Hove called Hixon Green which is a gorgeous luxurious sumptuous cafe bar restaurant. They have a giant table upstairs for large groups which will be perfect for a load of materials in the middle and all of us sitting around the table enjoying teas and cakes making me - your first doll! You can make me as a girl doll, a boy doll or even a cat or bear if you wish! Maria Doll will show you how to make different faces and it's so much fun you'll just be making dolls for everyone's birthday and Christmas present (which is totally our intention here at Maria's Doll School) All materials will be provided however to make me really personal, we invite you to bring something that is special to you such as an old piece of clothing that you may want to use for your doll. It could be some old jewelry that no longer has a mate, or buttons, ribbons, pompoms - the sky is the limit. Think outside of the doll box. The most difficult thing part about making a doll is to get the face right, looking lovely and not scary. When Maria Doll was little her mum's friend made her a doll and she had a very scary face and so she and her friend used to dare each other to leave her out when she slept over and they'd get so scared! Eventually they lost the brave battle and decided to hide her in the cupboard - but they still knew she was there so waaaaaaaaaaah! So we don't want to be scaring small children (or big children) with scary faces. Maria Doll will teach you how to draft a face that is anatomically correct from scratch in the simplest possible way to create your own unique face and if you get really stuck, Maria can do it for you, and so it will end up looking a lot like me :) So however you cut and slice it (cake thoughts) you'll walk away with a gorgeous doll. The beauty of this pattern is that the face is done on a separate circle of fabric and then stitched onto the doll... genius! That means you can do as many faces as you like until you are happy and then sew it on and doll's your auntie! Otherwise you spend all day making a doll and then get to the face wrong and disaster... So this method is fail safe and you'll love it.
